A French press is a French coffee or tea brewing device; it is also known as the press pot. It is simple to operate and produces stronger coffee than other devices. The French invented the press pot in the 1850's. The first was made of metal and functioned roughly as they do today by pressing coffee grounds to the bottom of a metal pot through a metal screen. The Italians reinvented the machine in the 1930's first with metal and then with glass. The pot has been refined over the years to the single chambered French press pot that we know today.
How the French press works?
The operation of the French press is very simple. It works on a very basic principle and brewing coffee in a French press is not complicated. To make coffee with the French press you have to remove the plunger and place coarse ground coffee into the glass pot (one table spoon of coffee for every 4 oz of water). Pour almost boiling water into the coffee and stir carefully. Then place the plunger on the pot to seal and allow the coffee to brew for four to five minute (some people say eight minutes is best). Follow by lowering the plunger with as little pressure as possible. (Pushing the plunger too hard can force hot coffee and grinds out of the device.) Once this is done pour the coffee and serve immediately. If the coffee is ground too finely the plunger may get stuck, in that case stir the coffee and try again.
Bodum French Press Coffee Maker
Bodum combined the skills of the Normandy craftsmen with modern production to make affordable coffee makers which later came to be known as the French press. With the increasing needs of coffee makers and the products of Bodum the French press became the most popular way of making coffee all over the world. The design of this coffee maker has not changed a great deal from the original drawings and they still make the Chambord with the same painstaking care and knowledge that they learned from those proud craftsmen in Normandy . The instructions of how to use this coffee maker can be downloaded from their site and saved for later reference and use. The parts for this coffee maker are also easily available and can be purchased from the net or stores when you need to. The capacity of this machine varies with the size: three cup, four cup, eight cup or twelve cup. It has a chrome color finish which makes it look very attractive. This device comes in two variations, one with a metal lid and the other with the polycarbonate beaker. It is extremely easy to use and makes superb coffee.
Insulated French Press Coffee Maker
An insulated coffee maker is the revised version of the original French press coffee makers. It is the improved version of the old machine. The insulated coffee maker does not let the heat from the coffee escape. This results in hot coffee even a while after you have finished brewing. There is not much difference between the normal French press and the insulated version; they both work on the same principle except that the later can keep the coffee hot where as with the former you have to drink your coffee as soon as you brew it to prevent it from getting cold.
